PLASMA FLOW CONTROL: FUNDAMENTALS, MODELING AND APPLICATIONS
From February 21 to 24, 2011
von Karman Institute, Rhode-St-Genèse, Belgium

Efficient aeronautical systems request a thorough knowledge of the complex aero-thermal phenomena. Advances in aero-thermodynamics, aero-elasticity and aero-acoustics largely depend on the understanding of the flow structures, and the ability to control them. Among the effective flow control strategies, practical solutions based on electrical discharges have proved for many years their effective potentialities.
The objective of the present lecture series is to provide theoretical and technical understanding guidelines on the prospects offered by electrical discharge techniques for internal/external flow control applications. The theoretical grounds for existing strategies, such as those based on Joule heating, EHD and MHD actuation will be presented. The current challenges in the prediction of such actuation mechanisms will be reviewed including the coupling of CFD engineering tools with high fidelity description of the electrical discharge. The lecture series will address practical implementations of plasma actuators for applications in subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic regimes.
